Sermon

Summary The speaker begins with a personal reflection on a community member’s family experience to emphasize caution and care in daily life, especially in driving and walking safety. The focus then shifts to the upcoming midterm elections, explaining their significance and the structure of government terms—highlighting that all House of Representatives members and one-third of the Senate are elected every two years. The speaker quizzes the audience on common civic terms like “precinct” and “referendum,” providing simple definitions to clarify voter knowledge. Emphasis is placed on the importance of midterms as a mechanism for accountability, as elected officials serve temporarily and can be replaced, giving “we the people” ultimate power. The speaker elaborates on the governor’s role as the state’s chief executive with broad responsibilities, including law approval, emergency declarations, and state military command. Personal examples of individuals with no traditional political background who successfully ran for office illustrate that ordinary citizens, including the listeners, could potentially become governors themselves. Ten qualities common to the speaker’s community are listed as reasons why anyone could be suited for public office, underscoring the message that civic engagement is achievable and vital. The talk concludes with a motivational call for all to vote on election day and act as “alpha citizens” who lead by example in addressing societal challenges and crises worldwide. A final prayer asks for guidance and strength for leaders, families, and the community to inspire positive change. The overall message is one of empowerment, education, and responsibility in democratic participation. Highlights

Sunday school: Moral lesson from Korean classic story “Chun Hyang Jeon"

Chunhyangjeon as one of Korea's best-loved old stories. It is set in the Joseon period in the town of Namwon. It was performed as pansori, a style of singing with a drum, and asks whether you will keep a promise when it is hard.

Chunhyang ("Spring Fragrance") is a kind, clever girl from a family not considered important. She meets Mongryong, the governor's son, who sees her heart and not her status. They promise to belong to each other.

Mongryong's family moves to the capital. He says "Wait for me," then sends no word. The slide is about how hard waiting is.

The new governor, Byeon Hakdo, is proud and self-serving. He orders Chunhyang to serve him. She refuses quietly and bravely: "No. I have already given my promise." She is imprisoned and pressured to give in, but she stays faithful and hopeful.

Mongryong passes the royal exam and becomes a secret royal inspector (amhaeng-eosa). He returns disguised as a poor traveler. At the governor's feast he reveals himself, the governor is removed, and Chunhyang is freed.

Four takeaways, each with a Bible verse:

  • Keep your word (Psalm 15:4).
  • Be brave for what is right (Joshua 1:9).
  • Everyone matters to God (1 Samuel 16:7).
  • Hope holds on (Romans 12:12).

The story is not from the Bible but praises faithfulness that God loves.
