Rich Young Man - Morning Devotion on Mar. 8, 2024

The Rich Young Man

Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."

"Which ones?" the man inquired

Jesus replied, "'Do not murder; do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother and love your neighbor as yourself."

Matthew 19:16-25

Everyone is seeking happiness. People do what they do in search of happiness, but we know painfully well that they do not find it. On the other hand, we are a group of people who are agonizing and suffering almost to the maximum extent of misery. But we can find true love, lofty ideals, and all the positive things. Now we can reach a conclusion based on common sense. In the secular life of physical enjoyment, almost no enduring love can be found. As a general rule, you have more chance of finding love among those who lead a suffering life than among well-to-do people. That is exactly what Jesus pointed out when he said it is more difficult for a rich man to go to the kingdom of heaven than it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.

Who is the most patriotic person in a country? Is it a person who has everything at his disposal and can do whatever he desires? Who has love? Is it this well-to-do person, or is it more likely someone who lives in miserable conditions but is ready to give whatever he has for the sake of the nation? Which of these people has a better chance of finding happiness? The sacrificial person. Nobody envies him, but he is in a better position.

Of course, there are two kinds of humble people. One is forced to live this kind of life simply because he is poor. That may be a different story. But the man who could lead a first-rate, rich life but gives it up to live in a more humble fashion is the one who has the chance of finding love and happiness. You know the rules of the Principle very clearly. By the same token, a citizen in the greatest and most affluent country of America, who gives everything up and chooses to go to Africa and suffer with the people there, helping them to improve and raising them up above misery and sickness, is a great man. If Americans chose to trade their affluence for that way of life, they would be respected all over the world and they would find happiness. They would find the love and respect of other people. Does this sound farfetched or reasonable? This is reality.

The Realm of Heavenly Liberation

December 15, 1991

Would you prefer having true love or cheap love? Would you rather submit to the demands of true love from the very beginning, or only the last 20 percent of your life? A person who thinks he is clever might prefer taking the easy way. That is why Jesus said that it is more difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. In the Orient we say "the ear of the needle." Jesus meant that it would be practically impossible, even if the rich man lost all his wealth and sank into poverty. If a poor man could easily enter heaven, why would a rich man never be likely to make it? Once a person becomes self-centered and arrogant, even though he may falter and become penniless he will usually remain self-centered. That quality will not quickly vanish. Poor people, however, have flexibility. Because they have nothing, they are more willing to go anywhere and do anything.

Crossroads of Life and Death

Riches of Love

Matthew 19: 16 – 24 tells the story of a rich young man who asked Jesus’ advice about how he could attain eternal life.

Jesus told him to keep the Ten Commandments and also to love his neighbor as himself.

The young man said he had done that since he was very young. Was there anything else?

Jesus replied, “If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me” (Matthew 19:21).

But when the young man heard that, “he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions” (Matthew 19: 22).

Then Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24).

There is some speculation that “the eye of the needle” was a small, low gate in Jerusalem that a camel could pass through only if it was unloaded of its burdens and went down on its knees.

The tradition of this interpretation dates back to St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Anselm, Christian church fathers of the 11th and 12th centuries.

So, a rich person would have to take off the burden of his or her material goods and get down on his or her knees.

Jesus urged a simplicity of life and faith in God’s provision.

In Luke 12: 24, Jesus said, “Consider how the wildflowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”

In the Old Testament, wealth was considered a sign of God’s favor.

God blessed Jacob and Isaac with flocks and herds—they were rich men.

Verses in Proverbs seem to say that there is only one reason for poverty – laziness.

Proverbs 10:4 says, “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.”

Proverbs 12:27 says, “The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.”

Psalms promise that God will bless those who honor him, with prosperity.

Psalm 34:10 says, “Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”

Psalm 37:25 says, “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken nor their descendants begging bread.”

Ecclesiastes celebrates abundance as the fruits of a person’s labor: “When God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 5:19).

There are warnings, though, in the Old Testament not to focus on wealth.

Psalms 37:16 says, “The little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.”

Proverbs 8:11 warns that “Wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.”

In modern times, Mother Teresa said the West suffers from a kind of poverty.

She said, “The poverty of the West is a different kind of poverty—it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There’s a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.”

In addition to addressing material poverty, it is that poverty of spirit and of heart that we need to address through offering others the richness of God’s love and truth.

Forgiveness "The Marriage Saver" - Morning Devotion on Mar. 7, 2024

Forgiveness – The Marriage Saver

We know that God is compassionate, loving, and merciful.

Psalm 103: 11 says: “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.”

At the same time, God expects us to be compassionate, loving and merciful too.

It is a two-way street.

As you all know, numerous times in the Bible, Jesus said that if we do not show mercy, we will not be shown mercy. If we do not forgive, we will not be forgiven.

For example, the “Our Father” says, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).

Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7).

Jesus also said, “If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6: 14 - 15).

So, we must forgive others. But how?

Easier said than done, right?

We tend to be blind to our own faults but to see others’ faults with 20-20 vision!

So, one thing that helps is to remember our own imperfections.

As it says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.,” and that includes each of us.

1 John 1:8 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

Or, as Jesus said (Matthew 7:3): “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

I was driving past someone’s home the other day, someone I know very well, and as I drove past, I thought, “Boy, she really falls short in loving others.”

But then I thought, “But don’t I fall short in loving too? Am I all that I should be to her or to others? No! So, I have to forgive her.”

We also have to realize it isn’t the person we are fighting. As it says in Ephesians 6:12: “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (KJV).

Satan sometimes works through other people to hurt us, maneuvering them like puppets.

There is some painful reason why the person is acting like he or she is. As the saying goes:

“Hurt people hurt people.”

The person has some good inside too.

The Amish, who practice forgiveness as a major part of their faith, were asked how they could forgive the evil man who burst into an Amish schoolhouse in 2006 and shot five little girls to death.

An Amish man said, “He did an evil deed. But he was not an evil man.”

In fact, even the most evil-seeming person has the original nature, the divine stamp of God somewhere deep inside. So, even if he or she is acting evil, the person is not all evil. He or she is also a child of God. Knowing that, we can begin to open our hearts to forgive.

Divorce - Morning Devotion on Mar. 6, 2024

Divorce

Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery"

Matthew 19:8-9

If you consider getting a divorce, you should feel shocked and faint. In the future, the word "divorce" will be erased from the dictionary. God will never compromise one inch on this. If you can discuss the possibility of divorce without feeling stunned, then you know how far from God you are. This is an absolute criterion. We have to live according to that standard before we can say we have gained absolute love.

True Man, True Church, True Country

January 9, 1983

Should a woman discard her husband if, for some reason, she feels he doesn't suit her? Should you divorce? No. Mankind never knew this before, but divorce is similar to the act of abortion. Staying married creates the possibility for the fulfillment of all these goals, but divorce breaks down every possibility destroying the parents, the children, and the ideal.

Ask your original mind: Should you divorce your spouse? Ask your children whether they want you to divorce. What about your parents? Ask them if they would like you to divorce. Nobody wants to go through divorce. The one who is pursuing a divorce will feel sad, but if he doesn't realize the seriousness of the issue, he will go ahead and sign the paper.

Thank You for Protecting Us

November 22, 1987

In this world, parents do not have absolute unity. They are inclined to struggle and fight with one another and even think about divorce. Is such a world heaven or hell? Do you imagine that your two eyes desire to divorce? These eyes always have harmony and unity one with another. They follow each other. Do you think that your left nostril desires to divorce your right nostril? They always work in harmony with each other. Your upper and lower lips always operate in oneness and remain eternally together. Do you think that your right ear will decide not to hear anymore and let the left ear do it all? Actually our five senses do not have any concept of divorce. However, our body's desire is the problem. Our bodily desire demands that our mind follow.

Within my family there are children from two different mothers. When I lost my first wife through divorce, I had to go through a wilderness course; I lost everything, in a way now the entire world is experiencing the same thing through the breakdown of families. The world has completely lost God's true love family center. It has lost God's value system.

Our Responsibility in Becoming Children of True Parents

February 16, 1997

From all the usual standards of appearance and education, your husband may seem impossible, but the important question is whether he is genuinely living for the will of God. However ugly that person may be, he can be refined by dressing him up and educating him and teaching him manners. The handsome man, on the other hand, would more likely think it is foolish to live for God and not for himself. Which type of husband would you want?

I experienced this very thing in my own life. My first wife was outstanding as an individual, but she only thought of her own welfare and that of our family. But I was looking for a woman who would take care of everyone else first. I wanted our home to be open for public service and a place of God's love, but she could not live like that. If I had listened to her, would I be here today teaching you this message? I knew that my wife had a very difficult task to truly live for the sake of others, while to follow her direction would have led to permanent death. I could not possibly live that way. When she knew she could not change my mind, she left.

The Book of Malachi and Marriage

“Malachi” is not a real name.

In Hebrew, it means “Messenger.”

The person who wrote it called himself a messenger of God or a prophet.

Malachi was written at a time when the priesthood of the Jews was very corrupt, and the people were very lax about spiritual observances.

Because of this, Malachi called the priests out on their bad practices, especially how they conducted their marriages.

In Malachi 2: 13 - 16, the prophet says:

“You flood the LORD’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the LORD is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant . . . The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the LORD Almighty. “So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.”

Notice how the messenger invokes the Lord twice in that sentence to give his words more power and authority.

This last book of the Old Testament, the book of Malachi, was recorded about 420 years before Christ.

There is no other recorded message from God for another 400+ years.

We can assume, then, that God meant what He said with these strong words.

Trinity of Husband, Wife, and God - Morning Devotion on Mar. 5, 2024

The Trinity of Husband, Wife, and God

In Mark 10:6-9 (NIV), Jesus was quoting Genesis when he said, “But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.’ Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Genesis 1:27 (NIV) says: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Genesis 2:24 says: “A man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

But just a man and woman together is not enough. We need a third partner in marriage: God.

Ecclesiastes 4: 9 – 12 (NIV) ends with the idea that a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.

If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.

But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.

But how can one keep warm alone?

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

God, husband, and wife is a cord of three strands that is the originally intended Trinity.

The strands of connection are broken by adultery, so there are warnings in the Old and New Testaments about that.

Proverbs 5:15-23 (NIV) warns men:

Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.

Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?

Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.

May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.

A loving doe, a graceful deer—

may her breasts satisfy you always,

may you ever be intoxicated with her love.

Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?

Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

For your ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all your paths.

The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.

For lack of discipline they will die,

led astray by their own great folly.

In this verse, instead of the cords being husband, wife, and God, the cords are those of sin, and they bind a person in a trap.

Hebrews 13:4 affirms this Old Testament standard: “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral” (NIV).

In addition to sexual morality, we need the virtues of kindness, selflessness, generosity, patience, and other virtues to make a marriage work.

(1 Peter 3:7, NIV) says, “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”

Peter links the relationship between husband and wife to the ability to communicate with God in prayer.

If the cords between husband and wife are interrupted, the line of communication with God is interrupted too.

With faithfulness and the practice of other virtues (character education), we can keep the cords between ourselves and our spouses strong as well as strengthen the third cord of the Trinity—our relationship with God.

Marriage - Morning Devotion on Mar. 1, 2024

Marriage

"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together; let man not separate."

Matthew 19:4-6

Have you thought about absolute love? Do you think about it all by yourself or with your ideal spouse? Is your ideal spouse eternal or temporal? When you refer to your ideal spouse, are you referring to the one who can freely touch you and embrace you anytime of the day or night without a time limit? Is that what you mean? Or, do you mean that this ideal spouse can only embrace you between certain hours and when you are eating they should not even talk to you? What kind of ideal spouse are you talking about here? You don't have confidence in your answer; that is why you are all laughing too much. But this is a serious issue.

We can only receive love from our partner. Therefore, if you want to find absolute love, you need an absolute partner. Then you can give your absolute faith, absolute love, absolute trust, and absolute life to your spouse. Otherwise you cannot receive absolute love from your spouse. Do you imagine that your eyes would prefer absoluteness or changeability? Your five senses like absolute love.

Have you ever turned your five senses against your spouse? Only when you have an absolute relationship between husband and wife, you can expect to receive absolute love. This is the prerequisite. Do you understand me?

Where can we find absolute love? In kissing? Where then? Our absolute sexual love organ, which brings man and woman into unity, is the place where absolute love can be found. The place of sexual intercourse. People do not know this truth. Those of you, who are without sexual organs, raise your hands. Your sexual organ exists for the sake of absolute love. This is your unique, eternal purpose.

Eternal love is found through your spouse. People have been unaware that the owner of the woman's sexual organ is her spouse. Likewise, the owner of the man's sexual organ is his ideal spouse. When this ideal husband and wife become one through their sexual organs, then the owner of their unity is God. We need to know that our sexual organ does not belong to our self but rather to our partner. And our combined sexual organs belong to God. We need our sexual organs in an absolute way because we have to find absolute love. They are that valuable, that important. They cannot be exchanged for anything in this world.

The Time of Liberation for the Family of World Peace

September 8, 1996

What is the most important thing? It is not money, power, or knowledge. It is true love. True love is more precious than life itself and more important to us than air or water. Why is it so precious and important? It is because it is the means by which we can meet God. Just as human beings desire to meet God, God also wants to meet true human beings because of love. The love by which God can see, touch, and share with men and women at the same time is the love by which men and women love each other.

Everybody Wants True Love

November 20, 1999

Now, let us discover the dividing line between heaven and hell. Is it up in the air? Where is it? It is in your sexual organ. This is a serious matter. When the sexual organ is used as a blind person wandering aimlessly and without direction, it will, undoubtedly, lead you as its owner to hell. By the same token, you will be led high up into heaven when you use the sexual organ according to the standard of God's absolute love.

Today we face a serious youth problem, because in the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve in their youth planted the seed of free sex in the shade through the fall. In the Last Days, the time of harvest, there is thus the worldwide phenomenon of rampant free sex among youth. Through free sex, Satan wants to stop every last person from returning to God; he wants to destroy all humanity and create hell on earth. Is not the world in which we live today hell on earth?

The family sets the cornerstone on the road to peace. The family can also destroy that road. It was Adam's family in which the destruction of the foundation of human hope and happiness took place. Therefore, when we establish the road going 180 degrees opposite from the direction of the satanic world, giving thanks to God, we can find freedom, happiness, and the ideal.

If all men and women admit that their sexual organs belong to their spouse, we would all bow our heads and become humble when we receive our spouse's love. Love comes to you only from your partner. There is no love other than love for the sake of others.

In Search of the Origin of the Universe

Jesus Stands Up for Women

  • Jesus made some very strong statements about marriage and divorce.
  • He was standing up for women.
  • The Pharisees had asked Jesus if it was lawful to divorce a wife for any cause (Matthew 19: 3).
  • Jesus talked about how things were in the beginning—in the Garden of Eden. (Matthew 19: 4-6).
  • Then the Pharisees challenged Jesus about Mosaic law.
  • They asked, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” (Matthew 19:7).
  • In Deuteronomy 24:1, Moses had allowed men to divorce their wives if they were “unclean.”
  • The problem was, women were considered unclean a lot of the time! (Leviticus 12: 1-5)
  • By the time of Jesus, men could divorce their wives if they burned their dinners (House of Hillel, first century BCE).
  • Only a man could initiate a divorce.
  • A woman could not divorce her husband.
  • So, the laws and practices were extremely unfair to women.
  • Jesus argued with the Pharisees and said that Moses only allowed them to divorce their wives because of their “hardness of heart” (Matthew 19:8).
  • “But in the beginning [the Garden of Eden], it was not so,” Jesus said (Matthew 19:8).
  • So, Jesus raised the standard for men divorcing their wives.
  • He said there should be no divorce except in cases of a woman’s adultery (Matthew 19:9).
  • What was more, he said, any man who remarried after divorcing a faithful wife would be committing adultery himself (Matthew 19:9).
  • This would probably make men who wanted to divorce their wives for petty reasons think twice.
  • Jesus really raised the bar for divorce.
  • He asserted protection of women from being thrown out of their homes and marriages for trivial reasons.
  • In addition, he gave men reason to think twice before they threw aside loyal wives.

The Adulterous Woman - Morning Devotion on Feb. 29, 2024

The Adulterous Woman

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger: When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her:" John 8:3-7

You know the story in the Bible where Jesus spoke to the people who almost stoned the woman who had committed adultery. Do you know on whose side God stood? God stood on the side of the sinful woman. Jesus felt toward her as he would feel toward his own sister or his own aunt. To Jesus, all women were related to him as sisters, mothers, or aunts. This spirit, this ideology was what God wanted Jesus to bring to this world so that everyone could live in the center. God did not intend to have Jesus be a pastor or religious leader who only spoke in glowing terms from a big pulpit. The true religious leader is crying out to the multitudes of people who are miserably defeated in this world.

Men Are Destined to Go the Road of Restoration

Jesus and the Adulterous Woman

This story took place near the temple in Jerusalem, where Jesus had been preaching (John 8:2).

·    John 8: 3 – 11 tells the story of a woman in despair.

·    She is about to be killed in a brutal and violent way for her sin of adultery.

·    The men who brought the woman before Jesus were going to kill her, but they also were trying to test Jesus.

·    At first, Jesus did not seem to be paying attention to all the furor. He was drawing figures in the sand or dirt.

·    Finally, he spoke. He said simply, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7).

·    It made the men pause and think.

·    After a few minutes, they all went away, stricken in their consciences.

·    John 10: 9-11 says, “They went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.  Jesus looked up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’  She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again.’”

·    Like the story of the Good Samaritan, this is a story of compassion for someone who was, as Father put it in the speech we just read, “miserably defeated in this world.”

·    There was once a great preacher named Henry Ward Beecher.  Beecher said this about compassion: “Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation.”

·    Jesus says it to us today: “Let the one who has no sin be the first to throw a stone.”

·    As Romans 3:23 says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

·    We all need compassion.

·     As we extend mercy and forgiveness so we shall be shown mercy and forgiveness.
(Matthew 6:14 – 15)

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
